It never ceases to amaze me all the good press automated software builds get by SCM experts.

Maybe I was fortunate to start my career for the right software development organization, but I would never consider working for an organization that did not value the benefits of SCM and software build best practices.

Now, do not get me wrong, I love CMCrossroads. I think it is the best CM/SCM site around...bar none!

Having said that - I came across another front page article on CMCrossroads about how an SCM expert came to appreciate the value of commercial build and deployment tools.

I am going to protect the name of the actual author, but I think everyone knows what I am talking about..

My contention is that you can not consider yourself an SCM expert if you are not following SCM best practices.

Especially, if it is a new concept to use automated builds and deployment tools and scripts.

Business Reality

I realize that the author was probably writing this article for CMCrossroads to promote their sponsors, but none the less.

There must be a better way of conveying this without sounding like automation is a new concept.

Future SCM

SCM Tools have evolved from simple checkin and checkout tools to fully encompassing ALM products.

In addition to source code control, these tools now encapsulate change control, software builds, project management, item/defect tracking, and fully automated testing capabilities.
