Aug 19, Software Builds

Have you heard about the Lindbergh baby?

It never ceases to amaze all the good press automated software builds get by SCM experts.

Maybe I was fortunate to start my career for the right software development organization, but I would never consider working for an organization that did not value the benefits of SCM and software build best practices.

I came across another front page article on CMCrossroads about how an SCM expert came to appreciate the value of commercial build and deployment tools.

My contention is that you can not consider yourself an SCM expert if you are or were not following SCM best practices. Especially, using manual build processes.

I realize that the author was probably writing this article for CMCrossroads to promote their sponsors, but none the less.

Have you ever heard of sliced bread....alert the media!

Conversations with developers and software project managers showed that the best way to enhance their productivity with our tools was to integrate them better with IDEs. While we are considering several other IDEs for integration, we started with Eclipse. The result is CollabNet Desktop - Eclipse Edition.

ALM, Application Lifecycle Management, tools will continue down their current path with increases in functionality.

Build tools will continue to be dominated by Ant and Nant with a little Maven.

SCM tools will continue to market to the ITIL and SOX audiences.

In other words, 2008 will be very much like 2007. Boring.

Looking forward to being wrong!
